New Year's Eve Adventure Race!

I'm wondering if any of you lovely folk have heard of this event:  The Quest for Father Time! According to the website, it will take place on New Year's Eve in the following cities:
Chicago, IL
Honolulu, HI

Nashville, TN
Philadelphia, PA

Richmond, VA
Washington, DC

Unfortunately, it is damn near impossible to find a sitter to watch our two year old on New Year's eve, so my husband and I cannot attend.  However, several of our friends will be going to the Chicago event dressed in Steampunk attire.

Steampunk'd a fun Short film

Hey Everyone,
I recommend reading the journal BEFORE watching the film. here is a link if you want to view it in another window, if not, the embedded version is below http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAfdm1PJSPk
The other day, the gang and I got a chance to experiment with a new still camera that shoots 1080p HD video.
I was given a day or two for prep, came up with this silly idea for an Over the Top funny steampunk short and 15 hours later here we are.
The Video was shot in 5 hours and edited in ten.
Please keep in mind when watching that this was just a fun project for me and the crew from Penny Dreadful Productions.

I understand it's not the greatest quality, there tons of continuity issues, awful lighting issues, and shaky camera moves, but hopefully everyone will enjoy it regardless.
The whole shoot in general was a real obstacle.

If this project were a real serious one i would hide this video from the eyes of any viewer, but This was just meant to be a fun experience, and a learning opportunity for shooting with the new cam, so all in all i'm happy with the results, even if they aren't to my usual standard.

Anyways here it is Steampunk'd

The Wolfman

We've talked a lot about new movies coming out that are steamy in nature. Definitely Sherlock Holmes, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and others, but one I had not heard of, maybe because it isn't being released until February 2010, that has incorporated a lot of steamy elements is "The Wolfman," starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. Normally, I'm not a wolfman kind of person. So many bad movies have been done about this subject, but this one looks like it should be really, really good and I fully intend on seeing this one!

Here's the trailer:

Steampunk Avatars

Someone just recently, and I apologize for not remembering exactly who, posted a thread about little reality pet games that are including steamy acoutrements. That reminded me that Yahoo has also included some steamy choices in their option for setting up your little avatar picture. There isn't a lot of variety of choice, but it is interesting that, here again, the "outside world" is picking up on steampunk. Has anyone who has Yahoo and does the little avatar thing noticed this and have one of their own?

Here's a picture of my avatar.

New Line of Romantic Steampunk Jewelry

I'm very excited about a new line of jewelry I just started on; finished up the first pieces this weekend. Much more romantic & detailed than my normal jewelry; these are a lot of fun! They still have some of my industrial accents, like tiny lightbulbs, little fuses, & other bits & pieces, but done in a much more feminine way. Check out the pics:

There are some pieces of old jewelry that have been recycled into new designs, lots of freshwater pearls, old rhinestones, & of course old keys.... This one is my fav. of the moment; love the old crystal & the little lock :)

Can't get enough old keys :) This one too! An old hotel key; love all the details on the key itself!

The Illustrator's Garden...

Recently I joined another Steampunk community called Steampunk Empire over on the Ning :3. One thing I notaced about the group was there was no space for steampunk & victorian inspired illustrators like myself :o so I created a group on the site for any steampunk artist to join, we already have had 7 members in the past 3 days and hope for more :) the aim of the group is to share our work with one another, help build publicity for artists and simply to view steampunk artwork:

Get your tie on! Plus, a surprise

Ladies and gentlemen,

As many of you know, I am a great fan of ties. They're magnificent accessories that look good and make a chap feel like he's a thousand pounds sterling (before adjusting for inflation, of course). Ties come in all manner of shapes and colors, and they can be tied in a wide variety of ways. They can add a bit of dash to an otherwise somber outfit, or they can be used to tie together various otherwise unconnected colors in the remainder of the outfit. Ties are naturally of critical importance to gentlemen wishing to dress steampunk, especially oriented toward the later portion of the steam age, but they should not be dismissed outright by the ladies either. Many's the charming female outfit I've seen incorporating a cravat or tie in a most appropriate fashion.

For those of you interested in pursuing the study of the tie further, please enjoy the following site and informative moving picture: http://www.tie-a-tie.net/

In addition to the above fashion information, I have recently discovered a wonderful steampunk-themed game geared for practicing one's vocabulary. It has a rather cute introduction, and the game itself, while simple, is jolly addictive. It is also marvelous for keeping the old brain up to snuff. I strongly advise giving it a whirl:

(no subject)

Hey, fellow steampunks! I've been hanging around the forums for a couple of months now, not saying too much, but trying to get the feel of steampunk. Well, this group inspired me to make my own outfit (it's still in progress, so no pics yet). But, on to the point of the post! I just wanted to let everyone here know that Anime Los Angeles has announced that Sunday is "Steampunk Day". Because the website is a bit blah, I'll pass on the info here. What: Anime Los Angeles When: January 8-10, 2010 (The 10th is the Steampunk Day) Where: 5855 W. Century Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045 (right near LAX) Anyway, I'll be there for sure, but it would be awesome to see some other steamers! Until then, cherio!

It's Done, Finished! Presenting My Outfit......

I wish the full length pictures were bigger, but as I haven't posted pictures before, I'm still learning how all this is done!

So, I have worked for about two months on my costume. Almost every day, but not to say ALL day every day. So, it really wasn't two months straight work. And a fair amount of that time was online research and spending money on ebay and other sites.

Another pictureless update...

Welp, I purchased the fabric (at least the corduroy) today. I got 50% off due to signing up for some newsletter thing. I will have to go back and get the lining and notions, but I feel that I have accomplished something in the meantime. Looked at the chair I mentioned yesterday, its pleather, so back to the drawing board. While I wait for my patterns to arrive (which were ordered yesterday), I am going to be doing more planning and thinking about the type of wardrobe I would like to aquire, and the type of character I'd like to portray. So lets take a proverbial look at what I have so far: 1 Black Corduroy Frock coat (in progress) 1 Pair of Brown leather buckled low top boots Patterns for two types of vest There are a few directions I can go with what little I have. No matter what shirt and pants I decide upon, I could be a Professor, a wealthy Oil/Airship/Train baron, or some other type of character. In my searches I found these. I like 'em, and I know that while it says they are WW2 style, I know that they were also used during WW1 and probably turn of the century.  I don't know if trying to add them to my costume would be shoehorning them in, but i am pretty fond of them. We will see about those I do suppose. So basically, right now I'm trying to decide on a direction to go, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mini Shadow Boxes

I've always been fascinated by shadow boxes and things slightly unconventional (ok that part probably goes with out saying since I'm in this group). The "shadow box" in this case is a round tin with a glass lid (glass lid removed for photographic purposes) that was found in a box, on a shelf in a closet, etc etc. The brass piece and the steel piece were both found a construction site. The mini top hat is a monopoly hat found on the side of the road after having been run over roughly 2.4 million times. It was spray painted flat black, and the scuff marks gave it a sort of rough felt texture. The bottom of the tin had some rather unsteamy printing that didn't want to come off so I added the copper paint...I was going add some nice (fake) leather around the sides but decided not to...and now am leaning the other way.

Either way I think it would look kind of nice on an old antique desk.

As always feed back, especially constructive feed back, is appreciated.

Thanks!

Put your imagination to work

Now that the first steampunk anthology has launched, I'm working on my story for Volume II and thought I'd enlist some help from the community.

I need a truly wonderful, phantasmagorical name for a steampunk ray gun to be used by a pirate queen with a galleon class dirigible and 3, count 'em 3, steam powered dragon harriers.

I could be coereced to release a hardcover of "Enigma" by C.F. Bentley (my spiritual journey with a literary twist in a space opera landscape -- but the space station has some steamy aspects in the sabotaged power system) as a prize for the winning suggestion.

Any ideas?

A little inspiration...

I follow a good many home/design blogs. Today, I found a link from one of my favorites, unruly things, to a new blog managed by the same people. Although it's not specifically steampunk, it's - and I quote: "a scrapbook for scientific/industrial inspiration." If you are looking to make your dwelling a little more mad-scientist/captain-of-industry, check out the inspiring stuff at "mossière". It's a very new blog, but I'm already getting attatched. Bookmark and follow for inspiration!
